Over the years, I've done much work with teachers outside of the ELA content area around literacy instruction and assessment. I've relied upon Ellin Oliver Keene, Stephanie Harvey, and Cris Tovani to inform what we do well, but I'm looking for additional resources/research/information. Whose work do you value most? How is reading supported across content areas in your neck of the woods?
We just took part in an extensive training in Content Area Training and the best part was the text we used: Literacy and Learning in the Content Area by Sharon Kane.
Personally, I think that English teachers working with content area teachers is the most effective teacher training that can happen. It goes back to the day we talked about Language Across the Curriculum and later Cross Curricular teaching. Maybe this terminology will work and we can get to what really works in instruction.
Thanks, Hellen. I'm not familiar with this book, and I'm going to check it out. Much of the work I've done previously was based on Mosaic of Thought and the work of Ellin Keene and Cris Tovani, so having a different recommendation is great. I appreciate it. I agree--asking teachers to work together is important. My only concern is that at times, particularly at the secondary level, teachers outside of ELA tend to view reading as the ELA teacher's responsibility...shifting that perspective is going to be an important part of the work that I do this year. Thank you so much for your help!
